Hooked on Nostalgia: Crochet This Cute Walkman Bag Now

Hey, crochet crew! Get ready to take a rad trip down memory lane once again, with my latest hook-tastic creation and pattern: the Crochet Walkman Bag! Straight out of the era of butterfly clips and scrunchies, this Walkman-inspired bag is giving me, and maybe you too, all the nostalgic feels. Picture it: Pastel hues, compact size, and a whole lot of 90s charm. It’s like taking a time-traveling crochet journey to the days of slap bracelets and Lisa Frank everything. So grab your crochet hooks, because we’re about to turn back the clock and stitch up a piece of the 90s that you can rock right now. Let’s go!

Material – Crochet Walkman Bag

  • 5 different colors of worsted yarn: blue, green, pink, purple, yellow, I personally used acrylic yarns (Kartopu Ak Soft), but you can use cotton yarn of course.
  • a 4,5 mm and a 2,5 mm crochet hooks
  • a craft wire
  • a 20 cm zipper
  • some polyester fiber for stuffing
  • D-rings and a chain for the strap

Abbreviations – Crochet Walkman Bag

ch: chain

sc: single crochet

hdc: half double crochet

dc: double crochet

dtr: double treble crochet

sl st: slip stitch

inc: increase

dec: decrease

BLO: back loops only

R: round / row

Note: There’s going to have 2 sorts of Puff Stitch: one is a DC puff stitch where you will have to make 5 DC together to form the puff stitch, and the other will have 4 DTR together. It will be indicated in time, which one to use.

Crochet Walkman Bag Pattern

The main body

Yarn used: pink and purple

Crochet: 4,5 mm

Note: throughout this pattern, every row ends with a chain 1 then turn, and every round ends with a sl st in the 1st stitch of the round, unless I say otherwise.

With the pink yarn, chain 35. Starting the 2nd loop from the hook:

Row 1: 34 sc (34)

Row 2 to 23: 34 sc (34)

Now we’ll be working around the edges:

Round 24: Ch 1, 22 sc on the 1st side (make a sc in every previous rows), ch 1 when you get to the 1st corner, 34 sc on the bottom (sc in every stitches of the begining chain), ch 1, 22 sc on the other side, ch 1, 34 sc on the top, sl st in the 1st chain 1 of the round.

Change color to purple, and starting the 1st chain of the previous round (and counting each previous ch1 as a stitch):

Round 25: 116 sc BLO (116)

Round 26 to 28: 116 sc (116)

R29: 5 sl st, 72 sc, sl st (78) all the unworked stitches of the previous round represent the top of the bag where we will sew the zipper.

Cut yarn and weave in ends. Make 2 part like this to form the main body.

Front green panel

Yarn used: green yarn

Crochet: 4,5 mm

Ch 21, starting the 2nd loop from the hook:

Row 1: sc inc, 19 sc (21)

Row 2: 20 sc, sc inc (22)

R3: sc inc, 21 sc (23)

R4: 22 sc, sc inc (24)

R5 to 16: 24 sc (24)

Now we’ll be working around the edges:

Round 17: ch1, 16 hdc on the 1st side, ch1, 20 sc on the bottom, ch1, 16 hdc on the other side, ch1, 24 sc, invisible join to finish the round (76)

Cut yarn and leave a tail for sewing.

The blue middle part

Yarn used: blue yarn

Crochet: 4,5 mm

Ch 15, starting the 2nd loop from the hook:

Round 1: 13 sc, ( 3 sc in the last stitch), 12 sc in the other side of the chain, (2sc in the last stitch of the round – which is the 1st loop we worked our 1st sc in) (30)

Round 2: sc inc, 12 sc, sc inc x3, 12 sc, sc inc x2 (36)

R3: 1 sc, sc inc, 12 sc, (1 sc, sc inc) x 3, 12 sc, (1 sc, sc inc) x2 (42)

Finish the round with an invisible stitch, cut the yarn and leave a tail for sewing.

With the yellow yarn:

Ch 5, starting the 2nd loop from the hook:

Row 1: 4 sc (4)

Row 2 to 3: 4 sc (4)

Cut the yarn, and sew this yellow part in the center of the blue part.

The Flowers

Yarn used: yellow and pink yarn

Crochet: 4,5 mm

With the yellow yarn make a magic circle.

Round 1: 6 sc (6)

Round 2: sc inc x 6 (12)

R3: 12 sc (12)

Join the pink yarn color:

R4: (ch 2, 5 dc puff stitch, ch 3, sl st in the same stitch, skip a stitch, sl st in the next one) repeat this 6 times to form the petals.

Finish the flower with a sl st in the 1st stitch, cut the yarn and leave a tail for sewing. Make 2 flower this way.

Sew the flowers on the side of the blue part, make sure to fill the center of the flower with some polyester fiber to make it puffy.

Then sew everything on the green panel we previously made.

And finally sew the green panel on the front side of the bag.

Sew one side of the zipper on this side of the bag, at the top.

The Buttons – Crochet Walkman Bag

Yarn used: blue, yellow and green.

Crochet: 4,5 mm

Ch 5, starting the 2nd loop from the hook:

Round 1: 3 sc, (3 sc in the last stitch), continue working on the other side of the chain: 2 sc, (2 sc in the last stitch) (10)

Round 2: 10 sc BLO (10)

R3: 10 sc (10)

Cut the yarn and leave a tail for sewing. Make 3 buttons this way, of 3 different colors.

The volume button

Yarn used: pink yarn

Crochet: 4,5 mm

Make a magic circle.

Row 1: 5 sc (5)

Close the ring but continue working in rows after by chaining 1 then turn:

Row 2: sc inc, 3 sc, sc inc (7)

Cut the yarn. Make 2 this way, then sew them together.

Sewing the bag

Sew the front and the back of the bag together from the inner sides, using the back stitches only.

Now sew the zipper on the other side.

Turn the bag to its right side, then sew the buttons on the front side, at the top.

The strap tabs

Yarn used: green yarn

Crochet: 4,5 mm

Ch 5, starting the 2nd loop from the hook:

Row 1: 4 sc (4)

Row 2 to 7: 4 sc (4)

Insert the D-ring in the middle, fold it in 2, ch1 then going through the bottom and top stitches make 4 sc. Make 2 strap tabs this way.

Sew them on each side of the bag.

Headphone

Yarn used: yellow

Crochet: 2,5 mm

Make a magic circle. Note that you should not close the ring entirely, leave a hole for the craft wire.

Round 1: 6 sc (6)

Round 2 to 67: 6 sc (6)

Cut the yarn and weave in ends.

Cut a piece of wire that is slightly longer than the headphone’s headband, then slide it inside.

Grab your yarn back again, and your 4,5 mm crochet hook and make a magic circle.

Round 1: 6 sc (6)

Round 2: 6 sc BLO (6)

R3 to 5: 6 sc (6)

Cut the yarn, and make 2 of these. Sew them on each side of the headband.

The headphone’s flowers

Yarn used: Pink and purple

Crochet: 4,5 mm

Note: work the rounds amirgurumi style.

Make a magic circle:

Round 1: 6 sc (6)

Round 2: sc inc x 6 (12)

R3: 1 sc, sc inc (18)

Make 2 rounds this way, and place them back to back together. Join the 2nd color by going through the loops of the 2 rounds at the same time.

Now we will be working the flower’s petals:

R4: (ch4, DTR4 puff stitch, ch4, sl st in the same stitch, skip next stitch, sl st in the next one) repeat this 9 times. Sl st in the 1st stitch at the end. Make sure to fill inside the center of the flower with polyester fiber before closing the flower with the last petals, to make it puffy.

Make 2 flowers this way and sew them to the headband.

All is left to do is to add a piece of yarn to connect the headphone to the bag, attach your chain strap to the bag and voilà! You’re finally done!
